Live from Wolverhampton Crown Court
We are providing live coverage of the sentencing of Deng Chol Majek, the Sudanese asylum seeker convicted of the "vicious and frenzied" murder of 27-year-old hotel worker Rhiannon Whyte.
Majek was found guilty of murder on October 24, 2025, following a trial which heard how he stalked Rhiannon from her shift at the Park Inn hotel before stabbing her 23 times with a screwdriver at Bescot Stadium railway station.
Today, Mr Justice Soole will determine the minimum term of Majek’s mandatory life sentence and rule on a significant age dispute, following expert assessments to verify if the defendant is 19 as he claims, or 27 as documentation suggests.
Rhiannon’s family, including her mother Siobhan and sister Alexandra, are present in court today to see justice served for the devoted mother-of-one. Victim impact statements are expected to be read before the final tariff is passed.
