At the Old Bailey, jurors heard final arguments in the trial of Sara Sharif’s father, stepmother, and uncle, all accused of her murder. Michael Ivers KC, defending Faisal Malik, argued that Mr. Malik bore no responsibility for Sara’s death, claiming the evidence against him was entirely circumstantial.
Mr. Ivers criticized the Crown’s case, emphasizing that there was no direct evidence linking Mr. Malik to the injuries Sara suffered. He asserted that his client never inflicted harm on Sara, dismissing the accusations as baseless and “laughably wrong.”
Mr. Ivers accused Urfan Sharif, Sara’s father, of manipulating the narrative even during the trial, highlighting inconsistencies in his testimony. While Mr. Sharif initially admitted to a fatal beating on 6 August 2023, he later denied it, further complicating the prosecution’s case.
Addressing causation, Mr. Ivers contended that Mr. Sharif’s actions were the primary factor in Sara’s death, suggesting that efforts to connect Mr. Malik to the abuse were unfounded. He invited jurors to question why the prosecution relied on speculative arguments rather than substantive evidence against his client.
With closing statements concluded, the judge has begun summing up the evidence, leaving the jury to decide whether the three defendants are guilty of Sara’s murder or of causing or allowing her death.
